Peculiar mechanical behaviour arises for structures at micro- and nanometer scale, where thermal fluctuations become important, leading to (in)stabilities and diverging fluctuations. We investigate the mechanics at these small scales using assembled colloidal systems. This should ultimately lead to architectured nanoscale materials that exhibit desired mechanical functionality.
